Book release -- Slow Lightning: Astonished Poetry

What? Book release?

You heard that right! As of last week, Celia is a published poet <insert mind blown emoji>. This Sunday, November 12, she will read two of her poems along with many of the other writers featured in the anthology.

Before the readings, Musical guest Don Preston (Mothers of Invention) will accompany actor Ryan Cutrone (Mad Men) in a performance of Preston’s poem, “The Owl”.

Featured readers will be Richard Modiano (Beyond Baroque), Shannon Phillips and Kate Gale.

RSVP and preorder books to be signed at the event HERE AT THIS LINK.

Babilonia EP Release - Full Band Show

Finally, the stars align: all the traveling or far-flung musicians from the EP’s studio band will be in Los Angeles in early September! We will converge on the Second Stage of Hotel Cafe for a rare full band show. We’ll play the entire EP, If I Ever Think To Double Back, as well as some new and unreleased songs and selections from my previous releases.

This is a dream team of a band. Butch and David, who laid down the core groove of this record, are currently on tour with Lucinda Williams. Zak is a former member of Pete Yorn’s touring band and a deft singer-songwriter; and Alex and I toured together with Enrique Iglesias. Alex’s releases original music under the name Still A Great Night and he also has joined Miley Cyrus, Natasha Bedingfield and LP on stage and as a co-writer.

Babilonia - vocal, acoustic guitar

Butch Norton - drums

David Sutton - bass

Alex Feder - guitar

Zak Schaffer - guitar

EP RELEASE! and INTRODUCING... BABILONIA (it's still me, just...more me)

What do you call the debut of a new creative identity? A launch? A maiden voyage? A coming out party? A big reveal? A bat whatzvah?

It is a big deal to me, as I am releasing new music for the first time in years. My dear friend, musical collaborator and dandy cheerleader, Jeremy Little, started working on this record with me back in 2014, when I had just begun touring with Enrique Iglesias. Due to changes in both of our lives, we sidelined the project. When the Big Pause happened, we both had a little more time to revisit and complete the songs with a few more friends.

But… why the name change? Why not release these five new songs under my usual name?

Stay tuned for more backstory.

Petty Chavez: The Breakup Show

We are beyond delighted that we have been invited to play not one but two sets at the legendary Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena, Friday March 3rd. It's just a shame that, from this flyer, it also appears to be our last gig ever. Valentine's Day is over, romance is dead and we are billing this as The Breakup Show.

Before we are inundated with numbers for couples therapy counseling and memes of quotes from Mother Teresa, we are not actually breaking up. We simply thought it would be fun to play a set of our solo material, alternating between Celia's amazing new upcoming project, Babilonia, and some old school Minibar material from Simon. Neither of us has to look too far for a host of breakup songs in our back catalogues!

We will (hopefully) reunite for the second set, to perform all your Petty Chavez favorites and a couple of new tunes too.

Reservations strongly recommended as seats are limited and the venue usually sells out:

https://www.coffeegallery.com/

See you in Altadena!

The Underground Series: Petty Chavez and We Are the West

  • 701 Santa Monica Boulevard Santa Monica, CA, 90401 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

We are excited to join our friends Brett Hool and John Kibler (AKA the duo We Are The West) for their magical underground parking garage concert series that Los Angeles Magazine said “feels like the wave of the future”. Once a month, WATW creates a recontextualized and genuinely deep musical experience on the Saturday around each full moon. DJ Gerard Lollie, host of “Soundtrack for Sunday Evening” spins in between sets.

We Are the West transforms an everyday office parking garage into an extraordinary performance space. Different guests open each night, from established artists and acclaimed bands, to chamber groups and avant-garde sound experiments. On July 16, we will be those special guests! The garage itself provides an unusually welcoming environment, a perfect setting for We Are The West’s transporting and dynamic sound. “If the parking garage is an instrument itself, Hool and Kibler are virtuosos” Santa Monica Daily Press.

Look for the stairs on 7th Street (across the street from the main public library) leading down to the underground parking garage.

Suggested donation is $20, but we want everyone to join us, so give what you can!
